OUR HEALTH AND EDUCATION SERVICES

BFHWA was designed to provide all families access to health education and screenings. We offer free health services to many low-income families through generous corporate and community donations.

The purpose of BFHWA is to:

  • Promote disease prevention and wellness in families

  • Collaborate with health and human service agencies and members of the Omaha community in serving the black family

  • Advocate for the black family

  • Promote and provide opportunities for the education of the black family on health and wellness issues

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, BFHWA has used this time to reflect, re-envision, and reposition ourselves in a manner that we believe will provide us a better opportunity to serve the North Omaha community in a more efficient and effective way. Upholding our mission and vision requires us to: 1) acknowledge our challenges, 2) create space for authentic community engagement and partnership development and 3) translate data to actionable, community-driven, and meaningful changes. This journey has led us to going back to our foundation and expanding our work beyond our annual health fair including working with our partners to provide more health screening and education opportunities throughout the year, and improving the access and literacy of telehealth services.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
1

HEALTH EVENTS

In addition to our annual health fair, BFHWA is working to create more health education and screening opportunities throughout the year. These opportunities include a youth focused event and a maternal and child health (MCH)/Fatherhood focused event.

2

TELECOMMUNICATIONS SUPPORT INITIATIVE

As part of our efforts to address the Healthcare Access and Quality, and the Social and Community Context SDOH areas, BFHWA has teamed up with a variety of health providers to expand a telehealth and digital literacy project that supports North Omaha families in need of different chronic, behavioral, and mental health services. Health care follow-up navigation plays a major role in in this initiative (as with our other projects) as this ensures that families are receiving the appropriate care they need.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

Intentionality in our service and the relationships we build is crucial to the sustainability of the work we do. We will continue to build healthy relationships with community partners and champions. Our goal is to move from community engagement to community accountability.
